I'm glad I was able to revisit this series! In the book Jack and Annie are siblings who go on adventures in their magic tree house. So when they see a picture with a battle field from the Civil War, they are transported back in time to that very spot! I have always like history and finding things out about the past and as I read I remembered how much I loved this series. Mary Pope Osborne writes the stories to make it seem like you are right there with Jack and Annie. Osborne packs many different aspects into this book as well as all the rest of the books in the series. She talks about Clara Barton, African American soldiers, and many others aspects of history. The reader really gets a history lesson when they read these books. Her writing style does not making learning about history a chore but rather it makes it enjoyable! I like the flow of the writhing as well as how she describes the personalities of our two main characters. This is a great book for kids to read if you want them to get a taste of what the Civil War was and it gives a glimpse into that without being to hard for a younger audience. Osborne finds a way to tell the story of the civil war in the most kid friendly way possible but she does not sugar coat it. In the second chapter the reader is greeted by the visual of a man on a horse with a bloodied arm. For a history nerd like myself I found this series to be very interesting.
Jacob,
ReplyDeleteI have also always loved this series. Every book is a new adventure to different times periods or different places around the world. Mary Osborne definitely does a wonderful job of portraying the characters in these series. These books also allow for students to use their imagination in a fun and creative way. I haven't read this book of the series, but I may have to read it sometime!
